PLAYFORD AMT SILVER TENNIS TOURNAMENT
By Robert Laidlaw
Adam Taylor from NSW won last week’s inaugural City of Playford AMT Silver tennis tournament with an exciting 7-5, 7-5 championship match against 17-year-old Lawrence Bataljan (Tea Tree Gully), played at the Bicentennial Courts, Elizabeth Vale.
The first set was a roller-coaster ride, with Taylor holding his nerve to fight back after falling 4-3 behind.
Then in the second set, Taylor opened up a 4-0 advantage before Bataljan stormed back and threatened to turn the tide but it wasn’t to be.
With his brother Jason, Adam Taylor also tasted success in the men’s doubles, which was played Friday afternoon soon after the completion of the singles.
Losing the first set 6-2 to the pairing of Josh Boots and Paul Kramberger, the Taylors tied the match up with a 6-2 win in the second set, forcing a tiebreaker, which they won 10-5.
In an all-interstate ladies final, Victoria’s Monica Rajicic proved too good for Queenslander Kaylah Mcphee, winning the championship match 6-3, 6-2.
Rajicic was in control throughout the contest, serving strongly and pressuring Mcphee with her shot selection, with good length and variation in speed.
Mcphee had some joy when she partnered Claudia May to a 6-1, 7-5 ladies doubles championship victory over Annie Donaldson and Madison Bishop.
In the consolation finals, local Grove player Ben Toor won the men, while Rebecca Stewart took out the ladies.
